Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
