The UK and US have concluded a significant bilateral deal that will maintain no import taxes on UK drug exports going into the US market.

The Terms of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to raise spending on drugs through the National Health Service (NHS). This pledge secures that duties on these vital products will stay at nothing for a timeframe of three years.

This agreement is in response to earlier statements to significantly raise tariffs on branded drug imports, with increases floated as high as one hundred percent.

"This deal between the United Kingdom bolsters the global environment for new treatments and introduces much-needed balance to American-British medicine commerce," a release said.

Commercial Impact

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the Britain's most significant goods shipped to the America, which is by far the largest destination for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Statistics show that in the one-year period leading up to the third quarter, the UK sold medicines totaling £11.1bn to the US. This figure made up 17.4% of all goods exports in that span.

"This deal secures work, boosts investment and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a global hub for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Key UK Commitments

The deal entails several specific pledges from the United Kingdom:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it deems new medicines to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a goal to raise total public funding on treatments from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6% over the coming ten years.
  • Refund Ceiling: The amount drug companies must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be restricted at fifteen percent. In the past, refunds were more than twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

The pact follows a ongoing row between the drug companies and the ministers over drug pricing and NHS adoption.

The disagreement were intensified by claims that US customers were paying a premium for the equivalent treatments than consumers in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while major expansions have been pledged toward US facilities.

One official acknowledged that the NHS had to invest a greater share on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a share of its resources over the past decade.
