The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
