Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
