One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead covering more material or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most coming out each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
